Peak Pizza? Domino's CEO Exits After Move Into Chicken.
A boss of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who proposed the United Kingdom might have reached maximum pizza demand while diversifying the chain into chicken products has been replaced after tensions with its governing body.
Leadership Shake-Up
The former CEO is leaving after a brief tenure in charge, and will be replaced on an acting basis by the organization's operations head, Nicola Frampton, while Domino's seeks a permanent CEO.
The outgoing executive, who served at the company for a substantial period, had sought to redirect the UK's largest pizza food delivery firm towards fried chicken, stating in a recent interview there was not “massive growth” left in the British pizza industry. He noted poultry was the fastest-growing protein in the international market.
Governance Disagreements
Sources suggest that there was disagreement between Rennie and the governance team over his strategy and direction, although Domino's release said he was leaving “through mutual consent”.
Recent Brand Introduction
In September, the chain introduced its poultry offering – which Rennie called a “bold new chapter” for the company – and is testing it in 210 outlets in the north-west of England and the province.
While the firm is still planning to expand it across its almost 1,400 stores in the coming year as scheduled, it regards fried chicken as a supplement for its core pizza business.
Board Comment
Bull, the Domino's chair, stated: “We are confident that there are a number of opportunities to boost expansion and performance improvement in our primary operations. We are focused on selecting the suitable leader to direct the systematic rollout of that development approach.”
Industry Challenges
In the latest update, the pizza delivery giant, which has 13 million customers in the UK and Ireland, said transactions fell by 1.5 percent in the latest quarter. In the summer, it alerted that the takeaway market had “become tougher” as it blamed reduced spending in the lead-up to the budget and increasing labor expenses for below-target performance and a 15% drop in interim earnings.
Rival chains are also experiencing difficulties. Another major chain disclosed the shutting of multiple locations a recently, after the business behind its UK venues entered insolvency.
Health Efforts
Trying to keep up with consumer trends towards better nutrition, Domino's has launched reduced-calorie items, such as its Thin & Crispy line of bakes below 400 kcals as well as meat-free and gluten-free options. A big pepperoni bake has 2,311 calories. A big margherita has over 2,100, while a small has under 1,000 calories.
Acting Leadership
The interim chief has been with the company since 2021, and was formerly with the gambling company a well-known operator. It is believed that she does not want to assume the chief executive role long-term.
She said: “The company has a multiple current expansion and operational projects that we will be dedicated to carrying out at pace.”
Frampton noted these involved further work on the company's procurement system and menu innovation, and its rewards program.
The pizza chain is also without a long-term chief financial officer until March 16, when Andy Andrea joins from the beverage producer a well-known firm. In the meantime, Snow acts as temporary CFO.
