Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from AI Company's Directors

Board Resignation
The former official announced he would step back from public roles after Congressional panel disclosed his repeated communications with Jeffrey Epstein

Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is departing from the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.

Summers commented in a statement that he was "thankful for the privilege to have contributed, optimistic about the prospects of the company, and eagerly await following their development".

Summers, who once headed Harvard University, declared on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Digital Correspondence

The freshly disclosed messages revealed that the economist corresponded with Epstein until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 detention for alleged trafficking of underage individuals.

In a separate statement, the technology organization said it understood his determination to depart.

"We appreciate his many contributions and the insight he brought to the governing body," the company commented.

Legislative Background

This development arrives after both chambers of Congress decided on Tuesday to endorse a measure that would compel the federal prosecutors to disclose its files on Jeffrey Epstein.

The legislation will subsequently proceed to the desk of US President Donald Trump for signature. The President has said he expects to endorse the bill, after modifying his position on the matter following pushback from his base.

Correspondence Findings

A batch of Epstein-connected emails made public by the Congressional committee last week mentioned several well-known personalities in the financier's former circle, without suggesting any criminal activity by those figures.

The communications showed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often seeking to introduce Summers to prominent international personalities.

Individual Statement

After the emails were released with the public, he stated he took "complete accountability for my poor judgment to persist in interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".

He continued that he hoped "to rebuild faith and mend bonds with the people nearest to me".

Career Background

Summers served in high-level positions under Democratic administrations; acting as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as director of the National Economic Council under the former leader.

He headed the university from 2001 to 2006 and remains a academic there. When stating his step-down from public duties previously on Monday, he said he would maintain his educational duties.

Additional Consequences

Following the economist's declaration on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning research organization in Washington where he was a researcher, verified that the economist was not affiliated with the institution.

He joined the directorate of the AI company, which develops the language model, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to remove its top executive Sam Altman.
